The role of problematic drinking and offensive behaviors in the development of violence in youths

This study attempted to examine the role of problematic drinking and offensive behaviors in the development of violence in youths, in addition to the direct effects of selected socio-demographic variables such as age, gender, familial structure, financial difficulty, poor educational attainment, and high level of substance use. Data were from The Offending, Crime and Justice four-year panel dataset participating in a Longitudinal Analysis of the Offending, Crime and Justice Survey between 2003 and 2006 (Home Office dataset released in December 2009). Findings showed high associations between selected demographic variables were related to adolescent violence, but educational qualification, household income, and alcohol use did not show any impact on youth violence. Problematic drinking and offensive behaviors seemed to mediate the development of violence in youths. Preventive and treatment implications of these findings for the role of problematic drinking and offensive behaviors were suggested. The limitation of study and suggestions for future research were further discussed.
