『비평론』과 포프의 신고전주의 원칙 = Essay on Criticism and Pope’s Neoclassical Principles

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to read Pope’s Essay on Criticism as useful to understanding neoclassicism, differently from the traditional readings that think that Pope’s Essay on Criticism does not contribute to comprehending neoclassical theory. Pope does state critical principles of neoclassicism more widely and originally than any other poet. In the Essay, he insists on critical principles such as order and stability, balance and harmony, golden mean and restraint, elegance and refinement, clarity and correction. Especially, Pope is thought to be orignal in thinking that strength and smoothness should be mixed equally in the poem. He even says that romantic concepts such as the sublime are necessary to writing poetry.
