탐라문화의 성격과 발전 방향 = The Character of 『Tamna-munhwa』 and Direction for development

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The author has mainly focused on four main things for the
development of the Tamna Institute of Cheju National University.
First, it is necessary to make a distinction between Jeju Culture and
Tamna Culture from a present point of view of Jeju. It is called Tamna
Culture before the Goryeo Dynasty and Jeju culture after it. It can be
said that there is nothing much between the two other than the change
of their name for the sake of the ruling adminstration. The Jeju Culture
has inherited the Tamna Culture.
Secondly, The cultures of Tamna might be unproved. However, the
Tamna Culture has played an important role in showing the peculiar
characters of various cultures in Jeju. This is the main reason we, Jeju
people, have to explore, and preserve the lives and the customs in Jeju
which could be traced back to the Tamna Culture.
Thirdly, it is strongly expected that the Tamna Institute focus on
two things: to research the traditional Jeju cultures and to train
researchers for these cultures. Research centering around dialect,
traditional literacy and folk customs has been extended into the other
areas.
Finally, different research methods have been adopted for the new
directions. The Tamna Institute should be the place in which the
results of individual researchs have been talked and debated. Various
discussions can lead researchers, even though they have different
opinions, to the innovative conclusions. This is the way to show what
a genuine Jeju culture is about. Furthermore, it should be mentioned
that new efforts should be made to retrieve the ancient culture of Jeju
through the comparison of that of neighboring countries.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

필자는 제주대학교 탐라문화연구소의 발전을 위한 논의를 4가지로 제시하
였다.
첫째, 오늘의 제주도에 관해 접근할 때, 제주문화와 탐라문화를 구별하여야
한다. 고려시대 이전에는 탐라시대의 문화요, 그 이후는 제주문화이다. 행정구
역 명칭만 제주로 바뀌었을 뿐, 거주자나 그들의 문화는 그대로 이어져 온 것
이 사실이다.
둘째, 탐라 시대의 문화는 추론에 불과할 수 있다. 하지만 제주도 문화의 특
수성을 드러내는 데는 탐라시대 문화가 중요한 역할을 한다. 그렇기 때문에 현
재의 제주도민의 삶 속에 숨어 있는 탐라시대의 문화 요소를 찾아내어 기록하
고 보존해야 한다.
셋째, 탐라문화연구소는 제주도의 전통문화를 조사하고 연구할 뿐만 아니라
여기에 종사할 수 있는 연구자를 양성해야 한다. 지금까지는 방언, 구비문학,
민속에 한정한 연구가 중심을 이루었지만 앞으로는 그 폭을 넓혀야 한다.
넷째, 문화 연구의 방법은 다양하다. 따라서 개인별로 다양한 연구성과를 한
데 모아 연구소에서 토론의 장을 마련해 주어야 한다. 서로 다른 견해를 가진
연구자들이 토론을 통해 새로운 결론을 도출할 때, 제주도 문화의 특성은 드러
날 것이다. 특히 주변국 문화와의 비교를 통해 사라져버린 고대문화를 복원하
는 작업도 시도되어야 한다.
