The purpose of this dissertation is to search the formation of '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings and the form, alternative aspect, syntactic restriction and semantic function of '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings in late medieval Korean. The '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings refer originally to that of prefinal ending ‘-거-’ combined to conjunctive endings and be a part of compound conjunctive endings. The target of this study lies on '-kənɨl', '-kə dɨn-', '-kəniwa', '-kəni', '-kəna', '-kənmarʌn'.

Chapter 2 discusses on the forms, alternation aspects, formation process and types of the '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings. The paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations have been used to confirm forms of connective final endings of '-거-' synthetic-forms. In the 15th century, the ones that are analyzed as the '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings are '-kənɨl', '-kədɨn-', '-kəniwa', '-kəni', '-kəna', '-kənmarʌn' and '-kəndyəŋ'. In the 15th century Korean, '-kə X'-forms except '-kəna' were used widely on the non-transitive verbs and transitive verbs, and '-əX'-forms were used mainly on transitive verbs. The case which '-əX'-forms used on non-transitive verbs show various frequencies depending on connective final endings. '-kəna' in the late medieval Korean was a compound conjunctive endings that does not reflect the alternation of transitive and non-transitive verbs. In 16th century, '-kəX'-forms used to transitive verbs show more frequent than that of in the 15th century, and '-əX'-forms show the tendency of reduced usage. For '-kənɨl', '-kədɨn-', '-kəniwa', '-kəni', '-kəna' and '-kənmarʌ n', the syntactic constitution of [-kə-+-nɨl], [-kə-+-dɨn], [-kə-+-na], [[-kə-+-n]+[-m ʌranʌn], [-kə-+-ni], and [-kə-+*-niwa] was restructured respectively to restructured compound conjunctive endings, and their completion was in 15th century. The '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings can be divided to verbal noun ending form, noun phrase complement form, unitary form, and complex form for their original constitution. The verbal noun ending form includes '-kənɨl' and '-kəni'; the noun phrase complement form includes '-kəniwa', '-kəni' and '-kədɨn-'; the unitary form includes ‘-거나’; the complex form includes '-kənmarʌn'.

Chapter 3 discusses on the sentence structural types and syntactic constraints of the '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings. In late medieval Korean, '-거 -' expresses the speaker's confirmation or conviction about the incident. The phrases connected with '-kənɨl', '-kədɨn-', '-kəniwa', and '-kənmarʌn' are subordinate clauses, and they restrict the following immediate main clauses. '-kəna' consists constitution of '-kəna…-kəna hʌ-'. '-kəni' limit the main clause as subordinate clause and consists the '-kəni…-kəni hʌ-' and '-kəni hʌ-' constitution. The '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings in 15th century do not have the subject agreement constraint but their subjects of preceding clause are mainly the third person but rarely the first or second. For the mood of the following clause except '-kədɨn-', the constative utterance is predominant or is only feasible. The performative utterance shows often for the mood of the following clause of '-kədɨ n-'. Prefinal endings combinable with the '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings are ‘-si-’, ‘-sʌp-’ and ‘-ri-’; '-kənɨl' and '-kəni' was free to combine with ‘-ri-’ in 15th century but was extremely restricted to be combined from 16th. '-kədɨ n' shows only few cases that are combined with ‘-ri-’ as if it was exceptional. To predicates of preceding and following clauses, intransitive verbs, transitive verbs, copulas and adjectives all combinable; combining with intransitive and transitive verbs is more common than it is with coulas or adjectives where these examples are hard to find.

In chapter 4, the meaning of the '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings of the late medieval Korean was discussed. The primary meaning of '-kənɨ l', '-kəniwa', '-kəni' and '-kənmarʌn' is a context presentation and the secondary meaning has the meaning of contrast, concession, cause, and addition depending on the '-kə-' restructured compound conjunctive endings. The primary meaning of '-kə dɨn-' is a condition and the secondary meaning is context presentation, contrast, concession, and cause. '-kəna' only represents the meaning of a selection. '-kənɨl', '-kəniwa' and '-kənmarʌn' can be replaced each other when they are used as a context presentation.

Chapter 5 summarizes the above discussions and listed the issues that need to be further discussed.
