During the Cold War and the post-Cold War era, Taiwan issues have been the most critical variable in the relations between the US and China. Since the global financial crisis of 2008, however, their importance to U.S.-Chinese relations has decreased as the US sought strategic partnership with China, China stressed core interest while mounting an offensive position against the US, and cooperation between China and Taiwan was strengthened. Nevertheless, Taiwan issues still remain the most sensitive agenda today that could derail the development of their bilateral relationship because the US and China still have distrust and misunderstanding toward each other. Although the US acknowledges that maintaining cooperative ties with China is essential to addressing global issues, it is more likely that the US will reinforce non-political ties with Taiwan to an extent that the “One China policy” is not violated, rather than giving up on Taiwan or cutting back on its commitment to the security of Taiwan. China is also concerned about the possibility that unnecessary tensions, undermining strategic cooperation with the US., may arise over the Taiwan Strait. However, China is expected to take an even stronger offensive steps against the US when it comes to Taiwan issues because China has recognized the Taiwan issues as one of the domestic affairs. The more increasing it`s status and influence in the international community, the more various means to put pressures on the US. it will have. In particular, China will seek to keep external factors (i.e. the US) from intervening in its domestic affairs by strengthening ties with Taiwan.
