This study investigates the material characteristics and deterioration patterns of Fenlajian (粉蠟箋), a processed decorative paper widely used during the Qing dynasty, with a particular focus on works by Chusa Kim Jeonghui (1786–1856) and related late-Joseon examples. Fenlajian is produced by applying pigments and wax to the paper surface, resulting in enhanced water resistance and a lustrous appearance, often further embellished with cold-gilding(naenggeum). While Fenlajian circulated into Korea and was adopted as calligraphy paper by the literati in late Joseon—especially among the Chusa school—domestic research remains limited, and the term has often been used interchangeably with similar processed papers such as bunji, rapjeon, and naenggeumji. Accordingly, this study aims to clarify the concept and material features of Fenlajian and to characterize its major deterioration patterns based on the examination of extant Korean-held objects. A total of 19 cases (32 items) of Fenlajian were identified in the collections of the National Museum of Korea and the Kansong Art Museum. Among these, 9 cases (13 items) were examined through close visual inspection and analysis to document deterioration and damage morphology. The investigation confirmed that Fenlajian exhibits deterioration patterns that are distinct from those of untreated raw paper, notably surface cracking and flaking, interlayer delamination, and fold-related damage associated with repeated rolling.
Because many Fenlajian calligraphy works were mounted and stored in rolled formats, recurrent folding and rolling significantly reduce planarity and can induce cracking or loss of the surface pigment–wax layers, increasing the risk of irreversible content loss. These deterioration patterns are interpreted as the combined result of the layered structure of Fenlajian (pigment and wax coatings), material changes such as wax hardening over time, and the mounting and storage conditions to which the objects have been subjected. Based on these findings, conservation treatment and storage strategies were reviewed through two Fenlajian calligraphy works by Kim Jeonghui in the Kansong Art Museum collection: Kim Jeonghui, Clerical Script “Saya” and Kim Jeonghui, Running Script “Okdangjajinnyeong.” Both works were presumed to have been kept in a rolled state for extended periods, and their most critical conditions included reduced planarity due to vertical folds, flaking of ink and cold-gilded decoration, and local exposure of the raw-paper layer between fold lines. Treatment prioritized stabilization to prevent further loss and the mitigation of fold-related damage, followed by remounting designed to enhance physical stability. A dedicated storage box enabling flat storage was fabricated to minimize the recurrence of fold damage, and the post-treatment condition remained stable upon re-examination 23 months after treatment. Overall, this study provides foundational data for understanding Fenlajian as a distinct processed paper and offers practical considerations for the conservation and long-term preservation of Fenlajian calligraphy works associated with Chusa Kim Jeonghui and late-Joseon literati culture.
