Algunas notas sobre los SSNN escuetos : con particular atencio´n en el valor progma´tico de los PPEE

The main purpose of this article consists in putting certain restriction in the generalization of B. Laca (1996) of which Spanish bare NPs are not referential nor quantified expressions. She justifies her idea with semantic characterization of Spanish bare NPs as anumeric, no determined, generic and no inclusive based on her own examples. But we consider her idea an exaggerated generalization because the phenomena occur only when the NPs in question are focalized. In order to prove our point of view, firstly we showed that the examples for 4 main meanings of Spanish bar NPs introduced by Laca are on the contrary ones that support the quantified status of bare NPs and secondly we examined two different types of the focalization of Spanish sentences; focalization of all elements and partial focalization. When total focalization occurs usually Spanish bare NPs appear after verbs forming thetic sentence of VS order in which NP's quantified meaning is diluted in the process of forming only a judgement among all elements. A similar phenomenon occurs when bare NPs are focalized in the partial focalization, but the NP's quantified meaning is diluted but not as in the thetic sentence. In this sense Spanish bare NPs, as focalized, can be considered no quantified expression in contrast of quantified meaning of the same ones without being focalized. So the Laca's generalization needs to be modified by the the restriction that we have mentioned before.
