세라 룰의 『죽은 남자의 휴대폰』에 나타난 작화와 정동적 노동 = Confabulation and Affective Labor in Sara Ruhl’s Dead Man’s Cell Phone.

This paper focuses on the spiritual network which is ignored by the seduction of technological innovations with a dramatic device of the dead man Gordon’s cell phone. Although Gordon is eager to call somebody at the moment of his death, he cannot call anybody, just leaving a cell phone behind. Jean, a stranger, is affected in her interiority by chance, which arouses affects in virtuality. According to Negri and Hardt, affect is power to act, power of transformation, power of appropriation, and expansive power. Thereafter, Jean confabulates for all the characters deeply related to the dead man, Gordon. Due to Jean’s nice lies of confabulation, the stage of a profound secret and mystery in Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities and a lot of waiting and loneliness in Hopper paintings is transformed into a communicational space. Jean’s confabulation eventually reconstructs the deconstructed human relationships and brings vitality to the stage. The confabulation in Dead Man’s Cell Phone is none other than affective labor, which is ‘a spiritual pipe’ to connect to each other and ‘problem-solving and strategic brokering activities’ to recover the intimacy of human relations. The confabulation and affective labor in Dead Man’s Cell Phone produces collective subjectivities and transforms human relations.
