광장의 정치와 문화적 충돌 = 2008촛불집회에 대한 경험적 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 2008년 5월부터 시작된 미국산 쇠고기 수입조건 재협상을 요구하는 촛불집회 참가자들에 대한 직접 설문조사 결과를 분석함으로써 그들의 사회, 경제적 배경, 집회에 참가한 이유를 밝히는데 있다. 연구 결과 촛불집회 참가자들은 일반 국민에 비해 경제적으로 여유가 있고, 80%가 대학 재학 이상으로 높은 학력보유자임이 밝혀졌다. 일반국민이 TV와 라디오에서 주로 정보를 얻는 데 비해 촛불집회 참가자들의 대다수는 인터넷에서 정보를 얻는다는 점에서도 차이를 보였다.
집회 참가자는 이러한 사회경제적 배경 때문에 일반국민과는 다른 문화적 특징을 갖는 것으로 드러났다. 가장 특징적인 것은 집단주의적이기보다는 개인주의적이며, 물질주의적이기보다는 탈물질주의적이라는 것이다. 탈물질주의자는 전후 오랜 경제적 호황을 경험한 유럽과 미국의 젊은 세대에서 주로 발견되는 가치관으로, 물질적 가치보다는 삶의 질이나 인권, 환경 등의 탈물질주의적 가치를 중요하게 여긴다. 이들은 정치에 관심이 많으며, 투표와 같은 전통적 정치 참여뿐만 아니라 항의, 집회, 농성과 같은 비전통적인 정치참여에도 적극적인 것으로 알려져 있다. 촛불집회 참가자들은 서구의 탈물질주의자와 같은 문화적 속성을 보였으며, 정치적 참여에 있어서도 매우 유사한 행태를 보여주고 있다.
본 연구는 2008년 촛불집회는 물질주의를 대변하는 정부와 탈물질주의자 시민들 간의 문화적 충돌이었다고 해석한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to analyze the survey results on the participants of the 2008 candlelight vigils requesting renegotiation of the conditions of the US beef import deal and thus to explicate their socioeconomic background and the major causes for joining the demonstrations. The results suggest that the participants are more affluent and highly educated than members of the public are on average. They rely on the Internet as a major source of information, whereas most people rely heavily on TV and radio.
These attendees display different cultural characteristics. They are individualistic and postmaterialistic rather than collectivistic and materialistic. Post-materialism has been discovered among young Europeans and Americans who have experienced a long period of prosperity and security after World War II. They tend to emphasize post-materialist values such as quality of life, human rights, and environmental issues more than materialist values. They are much more interested in politics and actively involved in unconventional as well as conventional political actions. The Korean participants resemble Western post-materialists in terms of cultural attributes and political actions.
This study concludes that the 2008 candlelight can be characterized as a cultural clash between government, representing materialism, and post-materialist citizens.
