Digital maps are important infrastructures that represent various artificial structures and natural terrains such as roads, railways, and buildings on a computer as diagrams and location information, and serve as the basis for establishing national land policies. In the production of digital maps, the quality of existing geographic surveys and field supplementary surveys had the problem of inconsistency depending on the skill level of the workers. Therefore, in this study, we conducted geographic surveys and field supplementary surveys using handheld MMS (Mobile Mapping System) and evaluated their applicability. Using handheld MMS, we were able to effectively generate point cloud data for the study area, and we evaluated the accuracy by comparing it with VRS results, and suggested that lane generation and acquisition of information on the shape of terrain features were possible. The accuracy of handheld MMS was within 0.042 m horizontally and 0.061 m vertically. These results are within the accuracy of digital maps, indicating the applicability of handheld MMS for geographic surveys and field supplementary surveys for the production of digital maps. The method using a handheld MMS is a solution that can solve the problems of existing manpower-based geographic surveys and supplementary surveys, and will greatly improve the efficiency of related work.
