대학생이 지각한 외모만족도와 대인관계 유능성의 관계에서 자아존중감의 매개효과 = Appearance Satisfaction and Interpersonal Competence : Self-esteem as a Mediator

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The objective of this study is to describe the cross-sectional associations between appearance satisfaction and interpersonal competence in college students and to examine self-esteem as a mediator of this realtionship. For the research, data from 335 college students(female 53.7%) was analyzed using hierarchical multivariate linear regression analysis. The results were as follows: First, appearance satisfaction and self-esteem had a positive relation to interpersonal competence. Higher appearance satisfaction and self-esteem meant the student had a higher interpersonal competence. Second, self-esteem partially mediated the relations between appearance satisfaction and interpersonal competence. While appearance satisfaction had a direct influence on interpersonal competence, it also had indirect influence on the student's interpersonal competence through self-esteem. Third, the study has found that there were no differences between genders. Self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between appearance satisfaction and interpersonal competence for both male and female students. In conclusion, in order to raise student's interpersonal competence, it is important to help students, male or female, have positive perception on their appearance while at the same time focus on raising self-esteem. Based on these results, possible directions for further study in the field of education, counseling, and treatment program are also suggested.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 대학생이 지각하는 외모만족도와 대인관계 유능성 관계에서 자아존중감의 매개효과를 검증하고자 하였다.
이를 위하여 대학생 335명을 대상으로 외모만족도, 대인관계 유능성, 자아존중감에 대한 설문을 실시하였다. 분석결과는다음과 같았다. 첫째, 외모만족도, 자아존중감, 대인관계 유능성 간에는 유의한 정적 상관이 있었다. 즉 외모만족도가높을수록 자아존중감도 높으며 대인관계 유능성 또한 높은 경향을 나타냈다. 둘째, 외모만족도와 대인관계 유능성간 관계를 자아존중감이 부분매개 하는 것으로 나타났다. 외모만족도는 대인관계 유능성에 직접적으로 영향을 미치기도하지만 자아존중감을 통해 간접적으로 대인관계 유능성에 영향을 미치는 것을 의미한다. 셋째, 남자 대학생과 여자대학생으로 구분하여 매개효과를 확인한 결과, 남・녀 대학생 모두 외모만족도와 대인관계 유능성 관계를 자아존중감이부분매개 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과는 남・녀 대학생이 자신의 외모를 긍정적으로 인식하도록 하는동시에 자아존중감을 높이는 노력을 기울임으로써, 대인관계 유능성을 높일 수 있음을 시사한다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 실천적 시사점과 후속연구에 대한 방향을 제시하였다.
