Michael Curtiz’s 1942 Casablanca, based on the script by Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch, is a classic film which has ranked near the top of lists of the greatest films. Set during World War Ⅱ, the film deals with love between Rick and Ilsa as well as a conflict between love and a cause. Razlo is a Czech Resistance leader who wants to get a letter of transit to escape. When Ilsa and her husband Razlo come to Rick’s cafe, Rick has to choose between his love for Ilsa and the cause to help Razlo who hopes to escape Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis in America,
The main background of the film is the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca. In particular, “Rick’s Cafe America” in Casablanca itself is a metaphor mirroring a cosmopolitan community and the hope of escape from war-ravaged Europe. Various cosmopolitan characters (American, French, German, Czech, Norwegian, and Russian) throng into Rick’s cafe to get exit visa or a letter of transit to escape from Casablanca. Therefore, Rick’s cafe is the important place related with an escape motif. On the other hand, Paris is the place related with a love motif. For having loved and lost in Paris before the German invasion, Rick and Ilsa cannot forget the affairs in Paris. In this paper, the escape motif will be discussed, with special attention to such symbols as an exit visa, a letter of transit, a plane, and Rick’s cafe. The love motif will also be discussed focusing on the stories from Rick, Ilsa, and Razlo.
