The present study is an attempt to provide an analysis of TV subtitles from a linguistic point of view. Subtitles were first introduced to television programs in order to help those hearing- impaired viewers understand the oral contents of a program. However, they are now used very extensively for a variety of purposes beyond that public service, e.g., to arouse the viewers` interest and enhance the effect of the program. Thus, encoding and watching TV subtitles can be considered as a communicative act between the actors or the editors of the program and the viewers watching them. This study explores the functions and characteristics of the subtitles of two popular TV programs in Korea from the viewpoint of participant roles involved in the communicative act.
