The x and x' values of the nonstoichiometric chemical formula Mg1+xO and MgO1-x' have been measured in the temperature range from 400 to 1200℃ under oxygen pressures from 10-6 to 10-1 attn. In temperature region 900∼1200℃, the magnesium oxide single crystal has two types of nonstoichiometric compositions such as type I Mg1+xO and typeIV MgO1+x'. A change of the nonstoichiometric type occurs near the minimum x' values or inversion point in the above conditions. The enthalpies of formation and 1/n values are calculated from the temperature and oxygen pressure dependences of the x or x' values, respectively. The physical properties of the MgO single crystal such as electrical conductivity, defect and diffusion have been explained on the basis of the x or x' values and the mechanism of formation of the nonstoichiometric compositions.
