한국 유아교육의 현황과 과제 = The Current Status and Tasks of Korean Early Childhood Education

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Korean early childhood education system is divided into two parts: the kindergarten for 3-5 year olds and the day care center for 0-8 year olds, under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Hearth, Welfare, and Family Affairs, respectively. During the last 30 years, the kindergarten and the day care center have developed rapidly in both quality and quantity. Since the legislation of `ECE(Early Childhood Education) Supporting Act` in 1982 and `ECEC(Early Childhood Education and Care) Act` in 1991, the number of kindergarten and day-care center have seen significant increase. The legislation of `ECE Act` & overall revision of `ECEC Act` in 2004 have brought about the era of the `public` ECE & ECEC, increasing the possibility of realizing the equality & equity of chance for education, and the opportunity of qualitative development in ECE & ECEC. The Korean early childhood education and care have continued to develop, supported by Korean government since 2005, which faced the lowest birth rate in the world. However, the `public` early childhood education and care of Korea have not taken root, and the national curricula have only been partly applied in the fields of Korean early childhood education and care. It`s an appropriate time to reflect upon some of the necessary current status and tasks in the field of early childhood education and care. In conclusion, high-quality global early childhood education and care in Korea depends on the high-quality teacher with energetic zest, the high-quality parents revitalizing the weakened family education, and child-centered national policy.
