The Crucible dramatizes a moment of American history by dealing with the witch trials of the seventeenth century Salem, Massachusetts. The play was produced in 1953, when Senator Joseph McCarthy's power was at its peak, making sweeping accusations of communism against many people in public life and effectively gagging criticism by generating fear. Thus the explicit parallels between the two affairs produced misunderstandings among some critics who merely saw the play as the means of social protest.
The Crucible deals with the tragic victory of the protagonist. John Proctor seems to arouse our admiration and wonder when he chooses, of his own free will, to die. In this sense, he is a genuine hero of the tragedy, who is accused of witchcraft by Mary Warren who falls prey to Abigail's bad scheme.
The characters in this play are diuidr·4 mainly into three kinds : the power-centered group, the power-beaten group, and the bridging group These characters have their own personalities. Some of them deny any transformation while others undertake. This difference contributes to good composition of the tragedy The Crucible. It is due to this difference that John Proctor becomes the hero of the play and his death is looked upon as not a personal one but that of a hero.
