구스타프 메츠거의 미술에서의 역사의 재현, 매개, 기억 = Representation, Mediation and Rememberance of History in Metzger’s Art

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미술과 삶을 가르는 장벽을 허물고 미술을 통해 적극적으로 사회에 개입하여 변화시키고자 하는, 전형적인 아방가르드적 예술을 추구하였던 구스타프 메츠거에게 있어서 역사는 매우 중요한 화두이다. 왜냐하면 역사는 현재를 진단할 수 있게 하는 중요한 전제이기 때문이다.
역사를 다루는 그의 작업에서 중요한 역할을 하는 요소는 객체로서의 역사의 기록물과 또 이를 대하는 주체의 기억 작업이다. 신문을 이용한 일련의 관객 참여적 퍼포먼스와 설치 작업은 관객으로 하여금 역사적 사건의 매개체이자 저장고로 작용하며 세계를 바라보는 시선을 각인하는 신문의 역할을 비판적으로 사유하게 만든다.
특히 1990년대부터 시작된 <역사적 사진 시리즈>는 우리에게 역사적 사건에 대한 기억을 각인하게 했던, 재난을 기록한 유명한 보도사진을 이용하여, 보도 매체를 통해 반복적으로 노출됨으로 인해 오히려 사안의 심각성에 대해 불감증에 빠져버리게 된 현대사회의 현상을 비판적으로 사고하게 한다. 사진을 은폐하는 다양한 설치로 인해, 관객은 은폐된 이미지를 망각된 기억으로부터 소환하기 위한 인지적 작업, 이 사진을 마주하기 위해 요구되는 신체적 체험, 그리고 전시된 오브제 간의 다양한 관계 맺기의 시도를 통하여 너무도 익숙해져 무감해진 역사적 사건들에 대한 주체적인 기억 행위를 수행하게 된다. 이를 통해 작가는 관객으로 하여금 지나간 역사가 현재 시점에서 의미하는 바를 숙고하며 보다 나은 미래의 가능성을 질문하고, 변화를 이끌어 내게 하고자 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

For the avantgarde artist Gustav Metzger, who wants to change the society with his art, the history is one of his central issues, since historical consciousness is the precondition for the diagnosis of present status of the our society.
The most important aspects for his work that deals with history, is the aspect of mediating and recording the history and the act of remembrance about history. The performances and installations using the newspapers let the viewer(or participator)critically think about the role of newspaper, which influence our way of thinking about the present situation in relation to the whole historical process.
The installation works, ‹historical photographs›, deal with the problem how the journalistic photographs of the disastrous events in world history have made us apathetic about those events due to the fact that they re being intensively and consistently exposed. By covering or blocking the photographs and also by adding real objects to them, which are related to the contents of the photographs, Metzger makes the viewer engage oneself with one s hole body in the installation. Through this activity the viewers are able to recall the historical memory more consciously, which help them to be aware of their present crisis and to reflect about how to solve their facing problem.
