변신설화의 원형적 의미구조와 그 현대적 변용 : 구렁이 변신담에 담긴 수성·인성·신성의 요소를 중심으로 = The Archetypal Meanings of Transformation Tales and their Modern Modifications : Focusing on the Elements of Animality, Humanity and Divinity in Snake Transformation Tale

The study starts with scholarly curiosity to search meaning of transformation narrative and symbolic meaning focusing on transformation of human existence shown in transformation tale. Chapter 2 mainly deals with stories of transformation into snake and it divides six stories such as Sangsa Gurungi(Snake), Gurungdungdungsinsunbi, Jongsori(Sound of a Bell), Sunmyo that Becomes Yong(Dragon), Boyangimok and Gurung Wife according to each aspect of transformation and analyzed the narrative structure and meaning. Through these jobs, Chapter 3 grasped the mutual relationship between properties that enable the three categories corresponding to animality, humanity and divinity in transformation stories and those that enable the horizontal movement among the three properties and based on this discussion, studied the existential essence of human in the light of the symbolism of transformation. Chapter 4 searched for the aspect of narrative modification and modern meaning by applying archetypal structure of meaning of transformation story to narrative analysis of 2 animations, Onuri and Yobi, The Five Tailed Fox and 2 films, D-War and District 9 in the context of the above discussion.
In fact, our lives come up and down the points of animality, humanity and divinity and face various phases. As an individual living in reality, human properties include animality in that satisfies impulse of desire, humanity in that satisfies needs through exchange, and divinity that cares for other's desires through sublimation of their desires at the same time. In addition, in each moment of relations, they move between properties and repeat the process. Like this, for multi-layered and changeable essence of human existence, we could explain more core and archetypal points through the transformation stories and through which we can understand implicatively the phases of internal conflict, opposition, change and development of human nature. This is the important literary significance of transformation stories.
Also, it could be confirmed by examining new interpretation of the structure of meaning of modern transformation stories, Onuri, Yobi, The Five Tailed Fox, D-War and District 9 that the world view of narrative are being effectively used in both old stories and modern ones. This is connected to the present meaning of narrative that it is necessary for our lives living the present to make efforts and developments by mature personality through transformative ritual overcoming. In addition, it is expected that the research of this paper becomes a start so that the archetypal values of our transformation narratives are highly promoted and the potentialities get new lives through more various paths.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고의 연구는 변신설화에서 나타나는 인간적 존재의 변신에 주목하여 변신서사의 의미구조와 상징적 의미를 탐색하려는 학문적 호기심에서 출발한다. 먼저 변신설화에서 가장 양적으로 우세하게 나타나는 구렁이의 변신담을 연구대상으로 하였다. 그 중 선택한 <상사뱀>, <구렁덩덩신선비>, <종소리>, <선묘화룡>, <보양이목>, <구렁각시> 총 6개 설화를 구렁이․사람․용으로의 변신양상에 따라 각각 구분하고 서사구조와 의미를 분석했다. 구렁이 변신담의 6개 유형별 서사분석을 통해 구렁이의 변신양상을 자세히 짚어내면서 구렁이․사람․용에 해당하는 각 변신물의 상징적 의미에 대한 단초를 발견하였다. 이 논의를 바탕으로 인간의 존재적 속성을 수성(구렁이)과 인성(사람), 신성(용)으로 삼분화하고 상호적 관계를 유추함으로써 변신서사의 원형적 의미구조를 탐색하였다. 세 속성간의 층위적 이동은 타자와의 관계방식에 따라 이루어지는데 타자를 이기적 욕망의 대상으로 삼고 배타적으로 대응하는 방향은 수성으로 이동하고 서로간의 욕망의 교환을 통해 편익을 추구하는 호혜적 대응의 방향은 인성으로 이동한다. 그리고 이기적 욕망의 충동을 통제하거나 타자의 욕망으로 승화시켜 타자의 이익을 실현하는 동시에 자신의 욕망도 충족하는 이타적 대응의 방향은 신성으로 이동시킨다. 정리하면 수성․인성은 충동․교환․통제․승화의 방식을 통해 신성을 획득할 수 있으며 세 속성은 이 잠재적 가능성으로 상호적 연관을 맺고 있다. 수성․인성․신성의 자아는 곧 배타적 자아․호혜적 자아․이타적 자아로 설명할 수 있으며 실제 현실의 인간은 이 세 속성을 모두 내재하고 있으며 그 관계를 오고가며 인격을 성장시킨다.
앞선 논의의 맥락을 따라 2개의 애니메이션과 <오늘이>, <천년여우 여우비>, 2개의 영화 <디워>, <디스트릭트 9>의 서사분석에 변신설화의 원형적 의미구조를 적용함으로써 서사적 변용의 양상과 현재적 의미를 탐색해보았다. <오늘이>는 <원천강본풀이>를 작품의 바탕으로 만들어졌는데 오늘이의 행위에 비해 이무기의 여의주를 향한 욕망의 충동이 오늘이와의 관계에서 가치교환의 행위로, 그리고 여의주를 버리고 오늘이를 구하는 이타적 행위를 거쳐 결국은 용으로 변신한 이무기가 직접문제를 해결하고 승천하는 내용이 강조되면서 오늘이의 신성성이 약화되는 결과를 초래했다. <천년여우 여우비>는 일반적인 전설 속 구미호의 인간이 되고 싶어 하는 욕망을 사춘기 무렵의 구미호와 그림자탐정으로 양분하여 이기적 욕망을 이타적 행위로 승화시켜 극복하는 새로운 구미호를 창조했지만 방해자와의 대립과 징치로 인해 내적갈등의 원형적 의미가 약화되고 핵심서사의 몰입이 방해되는 아쉬움을 남긴다. <디워>는 우리나라의 일반적인 이무기 승천경쟁전설과 연관이 있는데 승천하는 이무기의 이타성, 인간의 호혜성, 경쟁자의 배타성이 작품 속의 관계망에 의해 조밀하게 나타나지 않고 인간의 일방적인 희생으로 인한 서사의 결말을 유도함으로써 핵심서사의 부재를 유발한다. <디스트릭트 9>는 인간이 타자와의 관계 속에서 이기적으로 욕망을 충족하는 과정에서 외계물질에 전염되어 외계인으로 변신하는데 사건배경으로 인간집단의 호혜성과 외계인의 배타성이 잘 나타나고 인성(사람)→수성(외계인)의 존재적 속성의 변모과정의 의미가 인물의 좌절의 감정이나 현실성과의 긴밀한 조우를 통해 전설적 성격으로 전달되고 있다. 이러한 사례분석을 통해 변신서사의 원형적 의미구조가 현대적 이야기에서도 효과적으로 적용할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
본 논문의 변신설화 연구를 통해 다층적이고 가변적인 인간 존재성의 핵심적이고 원형적인 지점을 짚어내고, 그를 통해 인간 본연의 내적 갈등과 대립 및 변화와 발전의 양상을 함축적으로 이해할 수 있었다. 여기에 변신설화를 주목하여 연구한 본고의 문학적 의의가 있을 것이다. 덧붙여 본고의 연구가 단초가 되어 우리 변신설화의 원형적 가치가 높이 재고되고, 그 잠재적 가능성이 보다 다양한 경로를 통해 새로운 생명을 얻게 되기를 기대해본다.
