Hippocrates or the author of On Ancient Medicine criticizes some
philosophers who attempt to systematize medicine by reducing it to the
interaction of one or more of the opposites hot, cold, wet, and dry, factors
which had played an important role in early Greek natural philosophy. He
regarded the theory of his opponents as hypothesis(hypothesis) and thought
of medicine as a well established art(technē). He tries to explain the origin
or principle(archē) and method(hodos) of the traditional medicine to show
its superiority to those of newfangled philosophical medicine. But the
meaning of archē in section 2.1 in this work is more or less ambiguous.
In a number of Hippocratic works archē is used of the ‘starting point’ or
‘principle’ of a method of medicine; in some cases the term seems to
carry both senses. In this treatise, archē refers to both a starting point and
a principle on which the rest of his account is based. He offers an open
system-the theory of human nature(physis) as a blend(krēsis) and ripening(pepsis)
of a large number of humors-that acknowledges the vast diversity of
medical phenomena, rejects a closed system that attempts to reduce all of
medicine to the interaction of one or two principles. In relation to the
origin and principle of medicine, his account of combination of physiological
theory and theory of nutriments must be regarded as a brilliant success.
