No other time in Korean history has undergone so many changes as twentieth century has. The political, economic, social, and cultural change of the twentieth century may be said to be much bigger than the change done for the past thousands of years. The aim of this paper is looking back upon the Korean traditional music of twentieth century and viewing its future prospect of the next century. The countless trials and errors made in twentieth century should not be repeated in this century. The settlement of sanjo and making samulnori a theatrical art done in twentieth century were successful. There have been, however, so many trials and errors in developing pansori into changgeuk form, in the field of newly composed Korean music, in emergence of orchestra of Korean traditional music, and in systematizing its theory. The task to overcome these errors has been given to us of twenty first century, and those errors made in twentieth century should not be repeated again. It was pointed out that the newly composed music should be given much more weight in Korean traditional music. The new genre in the form of composite art widens the territory of Korean traditional music. It is natural to think so, because the musical history of a country can be converted into a history of composition. The tasks of twenty first century, such as the development of a new genre and creation of new acoustics, have much to do with composing ability. This can be summed up as `Creation of Korean music.` Today, Korean music is interpreted in many ways, but it was defined in this paper as `the music which moves Koreans and evokes their sympathy.`
