지하 네거티브 공간의 잠재적 의미 연구 = A Study on the Potential Meanings of Subterranean Negative Space

The research focused on the subterranean negative space, created by excavating the material of the earth, as a counter method to constructed architecture employing additive materials. As a profound space that evokes the essence of humans and the earth, subterranean negative space is a worthwhile research subject, and this work attempted to discover the potential meanings of this space using aesthetic and semantic approaches to address fundamental issues of subtracted subterranean negative space. The concept of negative space in art and philosophy has been analyzed in previous research, and expandable meanings such as the space of potentiality, the space of transcendence, the space of relationship, and the space of perception have been abstracted. Based on these four themes, subterranean negative spaces beyond the boundaries of architecture, landscape, and land art were selected and studied as cases, namely, the National September 11 Memorial, Roden Crater, Walter Benjamin Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Double Negative, and Square Depression. These projects were analyzed to determine distinct characteristics in relation to the following criteria: space organization, design elements, and experiential elements. As a result, potential meanings of the subterranean negative space as a space with expanded context, a space with unified relationship, a space with personalized experience, a space with absence and memory, a space with new relationship, a space with new perception, a space with inversion, a space with revelation, and a space with infinity were extracted. This study proposes not only a specific design method but also the potential meanings and possibilities of subterranean negative spaces.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 물질로 구축된 상징으로서의 공간과 상반되는 방식으로 땅을 파내고 물질을 소거함으로써 생성되는 지하네거티브공간에 관한 연구이다. 대지와 인간의 존재를 깨우치는 근원적 공간으로서 지하네거티브공간을 연구대상으로 설정하여 지하네거티브공간의 조형적, 의미론적 분석을 통해 대지를 중심으로 공간의 본질에 대한 문제를 다루고, 땅 위의 건축이라는 명제 대신 대지를 덜어낸 네거티브공간에 대한 새로운 접근을 통해 그것이 지닌 잠재적 의미를 도출하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 이론적 배경에서 예술과 철학에서 다루고 있는 네거티브공간에 대한 의미 분석을 통해 잠재성의 공간, 초월적 공간, 관계성의 공간, 지각의 공간으로 지하네거티브공간이 지닌 의미의 확장적 가능성을 도출하였다. 이러한 방향성을 토대로 건축, 조경, 대지미술 등의 장르 간 영역을 넘어서는 작품(911 메모리얼, 로덴 분화구 프로젝트, 발터 벤야민 기념환경, 베트남 참전 기념비, 더블 네거티브, 함몰된 정사각형)의 공간구성, 디자인요소, 경험요소의 분석을 통해 지하네거티브공간이 지닌 특수성과 가능성을 규명하고자 하였다. 그 결과, 확장된 맥락의 공간, 일체화된 관계성의 공간, 개인화된 경험 공간, 부재와 환기의 공간, 새로운 관계맺음의 공간, 새로운 지각의 공간, 반전된 공간, 드러냄의 공간, 그리고 무한의 공간과 같은 지하네거티브공간이 갖는 특수성과 효과, 그리고 그 잠재적 의미를 도출할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통하여 지하네거티브공간이 가지는 구체적 디자인 방식뿐만 아니라 그 잠재적 의미와 가능성을 제시할 수 있었다.
