Thioltransferase is an oxidoreducatse that cleaves various disulfides and induced in response to stress conditions including oxidative, osmotic and heat stress. In our previous study, we have isolated temperature sensitive mutants that cannot induce the thioltransferase gene in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. In the present study, we analyzed the characteristics of one of these mutants, ttd3. The mutant showed significantly high percentage of the non-septated cells as compared to the wild type. The ttd3 gene was cloned by the complementation of its growth defect. The clone contains one open reading frame that encodes putative steroid reductase. Taken together, these results raise an interesting question that the putative steroid reductase might be involved in thioltransferase transcription and septum formation.
