This paper is to analyze the specifics of Korean traditional dance through Laban Movement Analysis(LMA), a movement analysis system, which was developed by Rudolf von Laban(1879-1958). I explore how effectively LMA could be applied in order to analyze and express Korean traditional dance which puts more emphasis on inner state and feeling than outer movement techniques. LMA oriented in Western dance movements focuses on outer movements. I analyze and describe `Sungmu`, one the greatest artistic Korean traditional dance by using the four categories of LMA; Body, Effort, Shape, and Space. It is very difficult to imitate the qualities of the movements of Sungmu by just watching video tape because we cannot express the distinct inner emotion that the dance emphasizes rather than body technique. But, LMA is an effective way to analyze the inner emotion and mood of the dance by applying the nine principles of Laban Bartenieff Fundamental. Shape can be seen during entire movements including hitting a drum. The long arc in the air drawn by the movements of his long sleeves seems to be formed Shape. I cannot feel the tension of his muscle at the phases of strong Shape Flow shown by hitting the drum. His Effort is an essential component for expressing his inner emotion. His Space shows very different mood as if he performs a ceremony for himself in his own unlimited space without perceiving the spectators or the stage. The stage is very small, but he seems to dance on unlimited space. Although we can`t dance Sungmu by the result of the analysis of the movements, dancing it would be much easier by understanding the mood, feeling and specific. LMA is an effective tool for analyzing Korean dance because LMA focuses on inner and outer movements equally. LMA is not only suitable for analyzing Western dance focusing on outside movements, but also effective for Eastern dance focusing on inner feeling and spirits.
