다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

European integration so far has been understood as functionalist. In so doing, there raised many inconveniences such as democratic deficit. This paper then tried to figure out an alternative approach to the integration process. Emphasis is given to European citizenship and identity formation. This is because we believed that to attain genuine and sustainable `United States of Europe` there must be some bottom-up procedure. Social dimension is still in the making but without it one cannot contend a stable maintenance of the Union. Throughout the research we discussed on the themes like employment and equality, immigration, and enlargement issues. Analogically speaking, integration process should learn more from the Nation-State building history in the sense that national identification was a product of artificial endeavor to create national entity, using Andersonian `imagined community`. Though we can not assure the optimistic view on the integration, it will probably not be pessimistic in the long run, given that Europeans are about to adjust themselves to the new era of globalization and regionalization.
