Coastal region of Papua New Guinea is mostly covered by Evergreen Rain Forest to form tropical vegetation. This area is classified as Tropical Rain Climates with the average temperature of 27℃ and the annual rainfall of 2,000-4,000㎜. Average height of highlands, where 1/3 of the population live, is 1,500㎜ above sea level. This highlands are seems to have adequate weather environment (average temperature of 18-20℃) for cultivation of temperature crops.
lt has been reported that the potential areas for arable crops, tree crops, pastures and flooded rice respectively are 44,220km², 55,950km², 34,000 km² and 61,310km² out of total Papua New Guinea area of 463,598km².
Generally, root and tuber crops such as cassava, taro, sweet potato, banana are mainly cultivated for main food crops. Coffee, cocoa, coconut, oilpalm and rubber are major cash crops. And mango, avocado, cashew, citrus, papaya, nuts are also cultivated as fruit crops.
