The Buddhist community responded to the Joseon Dynasty's measures to suppress Buddhism in various ways. Among them, the so-called “Ganpuseokgyoso” in Baekgok in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty was a rumor that pointed out the injustice of the suppression of Buddhism in politics and society during the Joseon Dynasty and demanded a correction.
This study analyzes the indirect and direct causes of the use of cows in order to understand the true meaning of this rumor.
The indirect cause of this rumor is the trend of suppression in political society that developed until the middle of the Joseon Dynasty. In Taejong and Sejong Dynasties, the consolidation of denominations and the abolition of the Sangha during the Yonsangun Dynasty were policy measures to eliminate Buddhism. In Taejong Dynasty, when social measures to suppress Buddhism began in earnest, the Jujaga Rite of the Four Great Houses and the Family Grave System were implemented, and in December of the fourth year of the king's reign, measures were taken such as prohibiting women from going to temples to perform Buddhist rituals, and in 13, reinstating all those who had become bhikkhus as yangga virgins. In addition, the expansion of the power of Sarim in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty triggered harsher measures against pretend Buddhism, and the practice of Shinto Buddhism was increasingly discouraged in Joseon society.
Against this political and social backdrop, the Seungni crisis, the abolition of the royal Buddhist temple, and the revolutionization of the royal dynasty were carried out during the reign of King Hyeonjong, and the Yeo Baekgok asks for the fault and designation in six paragraphs. Therefore, the most important direct cause of the rumor was the closing of the Buddhist temples in and around the city, which had been maintained even under the pretense of Buddhism, as revealed in the introduction and conclusion of the rumor. The royal temples, which had been the center of the city's Buddhism and influenced not only the royal family but also Hanyang, the capital city, were removed and the monks reassigned throughout the artificial and current generations. Baekgok strongly pointed out the unreasonableness of the division of these temples inside and outside the city into Inner and Outer Wondang, the revolution of Wondang, the abolition of Jasuwon Insuwon, and the abolition of the statues enshrined there, and insisted that they be rescinded.
