국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 임흥순의 실험적 다큐멘터리 < 위로공단 >(2014)이 가진 형식적, 미학적 전략들을 분석하면서 그것들이 역사와 정치에 대한 참여라는 전통적다큐멘터리의 관심사를 연장하고 갱신하는데 사용된다는 점을 주장한다. 다큐멘터리와 아방가르드 영화, 그리고 다큐멘터리와 현대미술 사이의 교차라는 2010년대 이후 한국 독립 다큐멘터리의 경향을 대표하는 이 영화에서 다양한 형식적 실험들과 이질적 재료들(파운드 푸티지, 사진 및 신문 자료, 퍼포먼스, 연극, 시적-관찰자적 쇼트들)의 결합은 형식과 매개에 대한 관심이라는 실험적 다큐멘터리의 특징을 보여준다. 그러면서도 이 영화는 여성 노동자들의 인터뷰를 중요시 여기고 그들의 삶과 기억에 대한 대안적 역사서술을 시도함으로써 한국 독립 다큐멘터리의 유산을 계승하는 동시에 갱신한다. 이는 존 그리어슨의 다큐멘터리에 대한 잘 알려진 정의인 ‘현실의 창조적 처리’가 최근 몇 년 간 한국 독립 다큐멘터리에서의 형식적 실험들과 장르적경계 횡단을 살펴보는데 여전히 유용하다는 점을 입증한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the formal and aesthetic strategies of Factory Complex, Im Heung-soon’s award-winning experimental documentary, arguing that they are used to extend and renew documentary’s traditional interest in the engagement with the realities of history and politics. While this film demonstrates a notable tendency of the Korean independent documentary since the 2010 for the growing attempts at the intersections of documentary and avant-garde cinema, and of documentary and contemporary art, its various formal innovations and mixture of heterogeneous materials (found footage, photographic and newspaper documents, performance, theatrical play, and poetic-observational shots) present Im’s concern with form and meditation as a characteristic of experimental documentary. At the same time, this film succeeds in inheriting and refashioning a heritage of traditional Korean independent documentary as they serve to reinforce the power of the interviews with female workers and thereby contribute to the alternative historiography of their life and memory. This attests to the validity of John Grierson’s well-known definition of documentary as the ‘creative treatment of actuality’ to the investigation of the formal experimentations and border-crossing in the recent Korean independent documentary.
