The reactions of 2-adamanyl bromide and tosylate with sodium azide were investigated under various reation conditions.
The reaction carried out under the phase transfer catalysis yielded mostly hydrolysis product, 2-adamantanol and only small amount of 2-adamantyl azide. On the other hand, when performed in aprotic solvents, e.g. DMSO, quite larger amount of azide were obtained.
The result of the reaction in the presence of mixed additives, NaN3 and Onium salt showed that good yield of adamantyl azide was observed and the yield of azide became higher when alkyl chains in the Onium salt were shorter. Thus it was possible to obtain 2-adamantyl azide in yield of 50% or more. When the reactions were carried out in the presence of NaN3 and tetrapropyl ammonium bromide.
When 2-adamantyl tosylate was employed, the reaction completed within 24 hours, twice faster than the bromo analog. Product formations were similar to those of 2-adamantyl bromide.
