In this study, the experiences of the children who have undergone foster care and have been reunited with the family were investigated with the approach of hermeneutical phenomenology developed by Van-Manen (1990). The in-depth interview was performed with a total of five participants, and the interview result was analyzed.
The analysis showed that the five participants experienced psychological confusion in the process where the decisions about entering to foster care and reuniting with the family were made regardless of their will. When they were in the families providing foster care, they missed the original family and displayed homing instinct toward the past. However, they also displayed psychological conflict in the process of returning to the original family without proper preparation. After being reunited with their original family, the participants showed marginalization with a strong tendency of continuously exposing a conflict with their biological parents. Some participants showed much psychological instability as they were re-entering to a group home or foster care, but they gradually started to accept a new point of view toward their biological parents and establish their own self-identity, as the stage of conflict passed. This article proposes various practical programs for the children who have undergone foster care on the basis of the results and discussion of this study.
