영화 <알파빌>의 인공지능 디스토피아 : 고다르식 텍스트와 이미지의 활용 = Artificial Intelligence Dystopia in Alphaville(1965): Godard's Method of Employing Images and Texts

국문 초록 (Abstract)

<알파빌>(1965)은 제2차 세계대전 종전으로부터 20년이 지난 시점에 만들어 진 SF 영화다. 고다르는 알파60이라는 인공지능 컴퓨터가 장악한 도시, 알파빌 을 통해 과학 기술이 인류를 억압하는 디스토피아의 가능성을 경고한다. 본 연구는 영화로 세상을 바꾸고자 했던 운동가 고다르가 <알파빌>에서 지적한 인 공지능 디스토피아에 대한 문제의식의 표현을 두 가지 측면에서 분석한다.
하나는 주인공인 레미 코숑이라는 캐릭터를 비롯해 기존 영화, 문학, 문화 텍 스트를 활용한 방식, 즉 상호텍스트성에 관한 연구이다. 또 하나는 합리성을 추구하는 미래 도시, 알파빌의 문제점을 드러내는 데 적용한 비합리적 이미지 활 용이 연출 기법으로서 주제 구현을 위한 합목적성에 적절히 기여했는지 여부를 살펴보기 위한 시각 내러티브 분석이다. 이는 영화와 삶 양측에서 새로운 길을 제시하려 했던 젊은 감독 고다르의 영화적 표현 방식을 들여다보는 시도이다.

Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville: A Strange Adventure of Lemmy Caution(1965), produced a quarter century after the end of World War II, envisions a futuristic city ruled by the artificial intelligence system Alpha 60, warning against a dystopia in which science and technology subjugate humanity. This study analyzes Godard's critical consciousness regarding the AI dystopia articulated in Alphaville from two perspectives, examining the filmmaker as an activist who sought to change the world through cinema.
The first aspect investigates Godard's use of intertextuality, particularly through the protagonist Lemmy Caution and his appropriation of pre-existing films, literature, and other cultural texts. The second aspect employs a visual narrative analysis to evaluate whether Godard's deployment of seemingly irrational imagery effectively serves the film's thematic purpose—namely, exposing the contradictions inherent in Alphaville, a future city that pursues rationality above all. This inquiry constitutes another attempt to examine cinematic language of a young auteur who redefined the possibilities of film as both an aesthetic and political practice.
