This study examines the narrative function and media expansibility of ‘multi-focalization,’ focusing on Yuji Sakamoto's representative visual texts: the film Monster(2023) and the drama Still, Life Goes On(2011). For the analysis, Gérard Genette's theory of ‘focalization’ and François Jost's concepts of ‘ocularization and auricularization,’ which adapted Genette's theory for visual media, were integrated to investigate how the audience's ‘cognitive knowing’ and ‘audiovisual perception’ are controlled within the texts.
The results show that within the compressed runtime of 127 minutes of the film Monster, multi-focalization functioned as a ‘cognitive trap’ that assimilated the audience into the closed perspective of specific characters through the intentional concealment and delay of audiovisual information. Through this, the viewers realize that they themselves were ‘ignorant perpetrators’ who hastily judged innocent others. On the other hand, the 11-episode drama Still, Life Goes On persistently juxtaposes the daily lives of the perpetrator's and victim's families through variable internal focalization, breaking down the dichotomy of judgment and guiding the audience to become subjects of ‘multi-layered empathy’ and solidarity.
In conclusion, the significance of this study lies in empirically demonstrating that multi-focalization in visual narratives goes beyond a simple structural technique to serve as a powerful device of reception aesthetics. It effectively dismantles the viewers’ confirmation bias and restores an ethical plurality regarding the suffering of others.
