It is the purpose of this study to show that the theme of an escape from reality and time is pervasive in The Glass Menagerie. As characters have a negative attitude toward time in the play, the viewpoint leads them to face tragic fates.
Time threatens characters in the guise of the haunting past or in that of the ineluctable future and no-time. Tom, the narrator and character, recalls his memory and reverses time through this play. He can not accept the responsibility for his family, or the boredom of his job at a warehouse : he escapes the drab present through 'Motion' to the future. Amanda constantly views the present as a sad contrast to her earlier life in 'Blue Mountain',the symbol of a romanticized past. Unable to cope with her tortured existence, she turns to the past as a means of the mythic South. Laura's physical defect causes her to quit school and retire into her world of glass animals and old phonograph records, the symbol
of no-time world.
Those who can not endure in the real world, Tom, Amanda, and Laura, turn to their own worlds, 'Motion,'Blue Mountain'. 'The Glass Menagerie', in order to escape the reality of existence. Finally, They have no choice but to accept their tragic destinies and the pessimitive view of life.
