This study was conducted to obtain the basic information on seedling establishment and early growth of rice under different seeding depth and flooding duration in wet seeded rice. Seeds of "Nonganbyeo" and "Hwayeongbyeo" were sown at 0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.0cm depth in trays and flooded at 3∼4cm depth for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days.
We observed that days to seedling emergence ranged from 3.7 to 11.0 days for Nonganbyeo and from 4.2to 12.6 days for Hwayeongbyeo. Seedling emergence of two cultivars was significantly delayed with deeper seeding depth and longer flooding duration.
Percentage of seedling establishment was highest at 1 day flooding in all sowing depths, with 79.2 ∼90.5% for Nonganbyeo and with 57.8∼66.5% for Hwayeongbyeo, but decreased sharply with longer flooding duration.
The degree of decrease was greater at deep seeding depth and long flooding duration. The critical flooding duration was 3 days for all seeding depths in cultivars.
No mesocotyl was observed at 0 to 0.5cm seeding depths in all flooding duration. At 1 -2cm seeding depth, mesocotyl length was longer as seeding depth increased.
The coleoptile length of two cultivars was similar in 1.5-2.0cm seeding depth of 3-7 days flooding and 1.0-2.0cm sowing depth of 5-7 days flooding but was longer as seeding depth was increased.
Plant height was significantly shortened at 1.0-1.5cm seeding depth of 7 days flooding, and 2.0 seeding depth of 5-7 days flooding but was not significantly differed other treatments. Dry weight was significantly low with deeper seeding depth and longer flooding duration.
Days to 50% emergence was positively correlated with mesocotyl length and coleoptile length, while this relationship reversed with plant height. Percentage of seeding stand was positively correlated with plant height and dry matter weight, but not significant with mesocotyl length and coleoptile length.
