The purpose of this study is to divide a learning style of Korean language learners and to clarify relationship between learning style and Korean language achievement in learners. Out of it, it examined the preferred learning style focusing on Chinese learners who possess the highest ratio among Korean language learners these days, and figured out which influence each of the learning styles has upon Korean language achievement.
In the meantime, the learning style in Korean language education has been mainly limited to examining relationship between individual variables such as gender, age and academic background, and learning styles, in addition to division of a learning style based on learners' country of origin. Thus, this study pointed out problems about a method of classifying and surveying a style, which has been used in learning styles of Korean language learners in the meantime and arranged relationship between learning style and Korean language achievement.
For this, it first carried out a questionnaire survey in order to examine a learning style of Chinese learners. Questionnaire was used by translating Willing(1988)'s ‘How do you learn best?’ in Chinese. The questionnaire survey was progressed from October 7, 2013 to October 15 targeting 161 Chinese learners who learn Korean language at Korean language education institution attached to university. The results of learners' Korean language achievement were set for mid-term and term-end examinations that were carried out at subjects' education institution. The analysis of the collected data was carried out χ2 test and t-test by using SPSS for Window program. Pearson's product moment correlation was calculated.
As a result, the learning style of being preferred the most by Chinese learners of Korean language was concrete learning style. It was in order of communicative learning style, authority-oriented learning style, mixed type, and analytic learning style. And there was no statistically significant difference in learners' individual variables like gender, age, learning period, and rating and in all learning styles. And in consequence of having compared it with learners' Korean language achievement according to learning style, the Korean language achievement of learners, who preferred concrete learning style, was higher than the mean score in the whole and was indicated to be higher in Korean language achievement than learners who preferred other learning styles. Also, the learning style, which was preferred the most in the high rank and middle rank, was concrete learning style as a result of Korean language achievement. However, the low rank appeared to have no learning style that is preferred definitely. However, this outcome in learning style and Korean language achievement was indicated to not to be statistically significant. Based on this analytical outcome, it suggested a teaching plan of having been applied to Korean language education by vocabulary, by grammar, and by four language skills according to each learning style, which is shown in Chinese learners of Korean language.
This study can have significance in a sense of having examined the learning styles of being preferred by Chinese learners of Korean language and of having statistically confirmed relationship between learning styles and Korean language achievements in learners, but has limitation as well that failed to perform actual instruction according to a teaching plan that was proposed by each of the learning styles. However, when a teacher understands a learning style of being preferred by learners and makes effort to apply it to class by reflecting this, it will develop learners' learning method and a learning strategy, thereby being expected to likely able to obtain positive learning outcome.
