The purpose of this thesis is to study the <<Korean Bibliography>> by Maurice Courant who was a French diplomat in Korea of the end at the 19th century.
Maurice Courant came to Korea as a translation secretary at the French Embassy in Seoul and served from 1890 to 1892.
He studied about Korean history and Korean culture with an affection after his leaving Korea as well as his staying in Korea.
He finally left twenty-one works on Korea of his whole 103 research.
Above all these works, the <<Korean Bibliography>> is well known as a magnificent volume of a book which includes 3,821 book names.
And the <<Korean Bibliography>> has a significance that is written by a diplomat with a pure learning motive, not by a Catholic missionary with a religious limit.
For the completion of <<Korean Bibliography>>, the French Catholic bishop Mutel and the French minister in Korea Plancy much aided him to collect data for the books.
Through the <<Korean Bibliography>> we can infer a view of Korea of M·Courant and other French men, and this book has been a base stone of Koreanology until now.
This thesis consists of four chapters.
ChapterI is an introduction, briefly discussing this subject.
ChaperII contains the life story, a view of Korea by Maurice Courant and his 21 works about Korea.
ChapterIII is a discussion of the <<Korean Bibliography>> itself, divided into three parts.
1. the study of Introduction
2. the catalogue of recording books―Teaching,
Studies and Languages, Confucianism, literature, Morals and Customs, History and Geography, Sciences and Arts, Religions and Foreign relations
3. a historic meaning of <<Korean Bibliography>>
ChapterIV summs up this thesis conclusively.
The bibliographic description or the bibliographical notes of each field in <<Korean Bibliography>> being inconsistent or incorrect, it must also be unified and rectified in the order of systematic description.
And several general conclusions have been reached by the present study. The most important ones are;
"The relation between Korea and Japan until 9th century and Korean influence on Japanes settlement in Korea, Pusan from 15th century"
and "Chinese stele in the realm of Kokourye". These are regarded as contributive dissertations in each field up to now, or give us a point of dispute at the present time.
Because of deficiency of the precedent researchs, the subject and sphere of the study is so general and comprehensive that more analytic and more profound researchs must be followed henceforth.
I believe that the time will come when the Korean bibliography written by Korean people more completely will come into being and it is the ultimate responsibility left to us.
