A large number of variables such as height, width, shape, location, conductivity of materials, inlet temperature, exhaust flow rate, air temperature, humidity, wind velocity and direction, involved in determining the characteristics of a chimney in Ondol has an accurate, theoretical approach almost impossible. However, of these variables, the most important ones are the temperature and the flow rate of the flue gas. This paper deals with the effect of chimney length on thermal efficiency. An experimental investigation, using model experiment, was performed in order to find out and improve the thermal efficiency of Ondol. In the experiment, temperature of inlet and outlet, of the radiator besides temperature and gasvelocity at the air hole, chimney inlet and outlet, was studied in the case of long and short chimney respectively. The results show that the chimney length has hardly made an effect on the rising rate of stove outlet temperature (radiator inlet temperature), but deeply effects on the calorific loss through the beginning combustion period only.
