Objectives : There are many factors which can give influences on the measurement of blood pressure. I could collect very precious data in process of training the members of the special team who would measure blood pressure in the National Health and Nutrition Survey and find very interesting results about the intra-individual and inter-individual errors in measuring blood pressure.
Methods and Materials : Forty two registered nurses were recruited. They were all healthy women. After the lectures about the principles in measuring blood pressure, they were divided into 14 small groups, that is, 3 women in a group. In a small group, they measured blood pressure of other members 2 times for each one, according to the standardized methods and procedures. After all measurements were finished, they changed the partners, formed new groups and measured blood pressure the same way. Each of them had the opportunites to measure blood pressure 12 times and to be measured 12 times during 3 sessions. These data were analized.
Results : Twenty-six(62%) of 42 trainees in the first and second sessions and 40(100%) of 40 trainees in the third session followed the standardized methods and procedures. 21(81%) of 26 trainees in the first and second sessions and 34(85%) of 40 trainees in the third session showed the intra-individual difference within 4㎜Hg. 11(41%) of 27 pairs of the measured values in the first and second sessions and 17(61%) of the 28 pairs in the third session showed the difference within 4㎜Hg as the inter-individual errors. 14(93%) of 15 trainees in the first and second sessions and 6(86%) of 7 trainees in the third session showed the difference within 4㎜Hg, as compared with the standard nurse.
Conclusion : It could be suggested that preciser and more reliable blood pressure could be measured when the standardized methods and procedures were thoroughly followed step by step. The establishment and implement of our own standard methods and procedures are strongly requested.
