국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 덴마크의 수출 데이터를 이용하여 기업의 가격과 매출액의 상관관계를 추정했다. 분석 대상 데이터 중 약 60%의 수출 제품이 가격과 매출액 간의 음의 상관관계를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 상관관계는 제품군 내에서 도착지 국가별로 상당히 다르게 나타났지만, 주어진 제품-국가 짝 내에서는 연도별로 다르지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 기존의 이론들이 이러한 패턴들을 대부분 잘 설명하지만, 국가별로 상이한 상관관계를 설명하지는 못했다. 이러한 패턴들을 설명하기 위해서, 본 연구에서는 가격-매출액의 관계를 (저비용 대체재 대비)고품질 재화에 대한 시장의 요구로 해석한 모형을 도입하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 국가별 1인당 GDP와 제품의 질에 대한 요구가 역U자 관계가 있음을 실증적으로 보였다.

We estimate the correlations between firm prices and sales within Danish export markets. We do this for every CN8 product-country-year market to which at least 16 different Danish firms exported between 1999 and 2006. Approximately 60% of Danish exports are to markets in which the price is negatively correlated with sales. These correlations are significantly different across destination countries within product categories, but not across years for a given product-destination pair. While some existing theories perform better than others at predicting these patterns, none can reconcile the variation across countries. To fully explain the patterns, we introduce a model in which the price-sales correlation can be interpreted as the market’s desire for high quality goods over low cost substitutes. We discover an inverted U shaped relation between a country’s desire for quality and its per capita GDP, which we term a Quality Kuznets Curve. This curve has a turning point around 10,000 Euros for Danish exports. The Quality Kuznets Curve appears both when looking across products and within products.
