나무꾼과 선녀 설화 연구 = (A) study on woodcutter and nymph

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 우리나라에서 조사 보고된 「설화집 수록자료」 64편, 「문장정리 자료」 27편 모두 91편을 연구대상으로 하여 유형구조 및 전승양상, 구조와 그 의미 등을 살펴보았다.
<나무꾼과 선녀> 설화는 남녀 주인공의 공간 이동 모습, 이야기의 종결 양상, 단락의 순차적 구조 등을 종합하여 「선녀 승천형」, 「나무꾼 승천형」, 「나무꾼 혼사 시련 극복형」, 「나무꾼 지상 회귀형」 등의 네 유형으로 분류하였다. 또한 각 유형들은 기본형인 「선녀 승천형」에 삽화가 계기적으로 점층되면서 여러 유형의 파생태를 이루는데 모든 유형은 「선녀 승천형」을 공유하고 「나무꾼 지상 회귀형」이 전체 유형을 포괄한다.
각 유형별로 각 단락에서 추출한 단락소의 연결구조를 분석하여 서사구조를 살폈더니 공통적으로 '고난 - 해결의 시도 - 해결'이 순차적으로 반복되면서 교체되어 나타나는 순환구조를 이루고 있다. 이러한 순환구조는 인간의 공동 심성을 바탕으로 고난을 제거하고 끊임없이 행복을 추구하려는 데 있다.
<나무꾼과 선녀>설화는 천상의 신성 존재인 선녀와 지상의 속된 존재인 나무꾼이 결혼하는 신성혼 설화로 두 주인공은 각각 천상과 지상을 존재의 근원으로 하는 결핍된 존재들이다. 이러한 고난을 제거하는데 보조자가 등장하게 되는데 이는 인간의 도리에 대한 도덕성을 강조하는데 그 목적이 있다.
신성혼에 따른 금기는 반드시 지켜져야 함에도 불구하고, 주인공의 내적이고 사소한 요인에 의해 비극적 파탄을 초래하게 된다. 나무꾼은 죽어서 수탉·뻐국새로 환생하는데, 수탉이 하늘을 향해 우는 행위·뻐국새의 울음 소리 등이 전설적인 증거물로 제시되는 변이를 보인다.
나무꾼과 선녀가 결합하는 데는 많은 시련과 장애를 겪는데 이는 성적 존재와 속적 존재가 결합하는 것이 얼마나 어려운 것인가를 보여주면서 혼사장애에 따른 통과제의의 의미를 갖는다.
남녀 주인공 나무꾼과 선녀는 각각 지상계와 천상계를 중심으로 '地→天→地', '天→地→天'의 공간 이동을 하고 있다. 이것은 태초에 미분화된 천지가 완전한 분화로 발전해 가는 인간 의식의 가시적 표현이라고 할 수 있다.
이상으로 <나무꾼과 선녀> 설화는 행복 추구란 인간의 공통 심성을 바탕으로 하면서도 다양한 유형 구조와 변이를 일으키며 오늘날에도 그 전승력을 잃지 않는 유기체적인 구비문학으로서 문학성이 뛰어난 작품임을 알 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Centering on the 64 folktales in Folklore Anthology and the 27 folktales in Stentence Arrangement Data, this study is to investigate their pattern structure, plot, meaning and how they have been handed down.
Woodcutter and Nymph has been develope into many various stories adding the episodes "A woodcutter ascends to the heaven," "A woodcutter overcomes the marriage barrier" and "A woodcuter returns to the earth" to the basic form "A Nymph ascends to the heaven."
The connection of each paragraph showed the structure of sequential repetition and contrasting repetition, in which the lacking conditions and their removal repeated themselves contrastingly and sequentially. This repetitive structure aimed at showing the continuous pursuit of happiness of human beings through the removal of their lacking conditions.
Woodcutter and Nymph is a folktale about the sacred union of the heavenly nymph and the earthly woodcutter, who are both lacking in something in that they are based on the heaven and the earth, respectively. In this story exists the assisting animal to fill up these lacking conditions of which the purpose is to emphasize the morality of human beings.
Although the taboo involved in the sacred marriage should be kept, the main character's internal, trifling whim(feeling) led to the tragic rupture. The woodcutter was reincarnated into a cock and a cuckoo after death, whose legendary evidence was represented as the crow of the cock toward the heaven and the way the cuckoo cries.
The crucible and obstacle which the woodcutter and the nymph have to get married show how difficult the sacred being and the earthly one are united and have the significance of the rite of passage related to the marriage barrier.
The hero and the heroine of this tale are moving 'from the earth to the heaven and back to the earth' and 'from the heaven to the earth and back to the heaven, respectively. This is the visible representation of human consciousness that shows the development from unseparated heaven and earth in the beginning tlo complete separation.
To conclude, Woodcutter and Nymph has a great literary value as an organic literature handed down to the present, based on the pursuit of happiness, the common attribute of human beings while producing various kinds of pattern structure and variation.
