Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of South Africa is well
known as the model case in dealing with the past. TRC, based on the
Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act in 1995, was
conceived as 'part of the bridge-building process designed to help lead
the nation away from a deeply divided past to a future founded on the
recognition of human rights and democracy(TRC Report Vol. 1)'. TRC
had tried all the efforts to uncover the truth about past gross violations
of human rights in the belief that this was necessary for reconciliation
and national unity. However, the road to reconciliation and healing was
      neither smooth nor short.
I've researched the various ways of healing and reparations during and
after TRC in South Africa society. There are three main categoriesreparations
in money or other financial aids, psychological approaches
to heal the suffered relationships among people and communities, and
building or removing historical sites to make the past memorable. It is
very meaningful and needed to adopt reparations in different levels even
though the dead and the past cannot be returned. Any reparations without
justice cannot heal the internal wound. I also emphasize that the
perpetrators and the benefiters need to be educated and healed to live
      in a 'reconciled' new community.
