The knit industry of Korea has been developed and modemized for more than 50 years. The current knit industry is now recognized as the appropriate industry for the lifestyle and trend og the 21st century and its importance and demand are getting higher. In the early days, the functional aspect of knitwear in the traditional skills was mainly focused. However, by the growth of computer knit and resurrection of handicraft knitting in the 1960`s of the development period, knit was regarded as a genre having both functionality and art. The knit fashion of the 20t century developed following the trend and change of fashion, structure, material of the 20th century developed following the trend and change of fashion, structure, material, and design. For the development of the knit industry. we should seek high quality and differentiation of product through the new translation of texture, structure and design, which requires exact understanding of knit and current status. In this study, Iresearched character and structure of knit and knit design which was reflected in the modern fashion. Through the theological study. I researched the concept, character and structure of knit and classified the knit history into introductory period (around 1920`s), spread period (1930`s -1950`s), development period (1960`s-1980`s) and mature period (around 1990`s) to study the knit design by time trend. In addition, I studied knitwear design of basic structure and applied stucture. The result of theis study is as follows. Knit has different characteristics from fabric because of its curvedly connected loop structure. Knit has merit such as elasticity, insulation, flexibility, drape and porosity but it also has demerits like run and curl-up. Recently these characteristics of knit are frequently applied design. It can easily make three dimensional texture and allow more various expression by different selection of yarn-twisting, knitting and gauge. Therefore, it demerits of knit are compensated, its future is bright.
