This paper notes that despite the increasingly blurred boundaries between cinema and video art today, both disciplines continue to generate distinct medium-specific “impressions,” with audiences still perceiving certain works as cinematic or video-artistic. It proposes that these impressions are shaped by internal operating modes—narrativity and non-narrativity—and clarifies these concepts through temporality, causality, and cognition. While narrativity constructs a singular, holistic worldview, non-narrativity produces a multiple, fragmented one by deconstructing temporal and causal continuity. On this basis, the paper examines how cinematic and video art traditions were historically formed, arguing that cinema reinforced narrative norms to establish itself as an art form, whereas video art embraced non-narrative strategies in relation to exhibition contexts and medium materiality. Analyses of Douglas Gordon’s 24 Hour Psycho, Alain Resnais’ L’Année dernière à Marienbad, and Omer Past’s August reveal that the medium’s impression shifts according to how narrativity and non-narrativity are reinforced. This confirms that the reason a film can evoke a video art impression, or a video art piece can acquire a cinematic impression, stems from the operation of narrativity and non-narrativity respectively. This paper aims to present a theoretical framework for more sophisticated analysis of contemporary hybrid visual practices by elucidating how the traditions and conventions accumulated by these two disciplines organize the viewer’s perception and impression.
