This study compared the biomechanical characteristics of vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) and lower limb joint moments during gait across different dance expertise levels using an AI-based markerless motion analysis system. Forty-five participants were divided into three groups: professional dancers (PD, n=15), intermediate dancers (ID, n=15), and non-dancers (ND, n=15). The KinaTrax AI markerless system was utilized to estimate vGRF and 3D joint moments of the hip, knee, and ankle during overground walking. Significant group differences were observed in hip joint moments in the transverse plane. PD exhibited a significantly higher peak left hip external rotation moment compared to ND (p = .04, d = .86). Furthermore, PD showed a significantly greater peak right hip external rotation moment compared to both ID (p = .04, d = .91) and ND (p = .03, d = .95). However, no significant differences were found in peak vGRF across the three groups, indicating that the impact forces of natural walking do not vary significantly regardless of dance proficiency. Specialized dance training, particularly the repetitive practice of turnout, may lead to increased hip external rotation moments in the transverse plane even during routine activities such as walking. The increased external rotation moment may have potential long-term implications for hip joint health in PD. These findings establish a scientific foundation for expertise-specific dance curricula and injury prevention strategies, while demonstrating the utility of AI-based markerless systems in capturing subtle biomechanical differences in dance science.
