Horticultural activities are proving to be beneficial for elderly individuals with dementia and physical frailties, despite limitations in physical mobility and mental faculties. Awareness of the characteristics and lifestyle associated with disability and aging is essential in the design of a garden environment. The characteristics and difficulties for conducting horticultural activities are mostly related to 1) mobility, 2) access to planting areas, 3) ability to use tools or techniques, and 4) sensory (visual, olfactory, touch, auditory) impairment. The best garden design for elderly people is dependent on an individual's strength, physical ability, clinical condition and personal preference. Well -designed garden resources can reduce difficulties in gardening and give a wide range of therapeutic benefit such as an increased sense of self-esteem, success, and self-confidence. The purpose of this article is to present accessible garden facilities and activities for overcoming common difficulties and characteristics of elderly people.
