According to Norman Daniels, the method of wide reflective equilibrium(WRE) can recast some traditional worries about objectivity in ethics. Different from the method of narrow reflective equilibrium(NRE), WRE includes a set of relevant background theories as an element composing it besides the considered moral judgment and the moral principles. For securing the objectivity in ethics, Daniels tries to solve the problems of the traditional critiques of reflective equilibrium ; One of the problem is that WRE is a disguised form of either moral foundationalism or moral intuitionism; The other is the problem of circularity. The key to the solution of these problems, for Daniels, is the role of background theories as independence constraint in WRE. In my opinion, however, there could not be background theories objectively established for rolling as independence constraint in WRE. This means that Daniels's arguments about WRE are not likely to be successful.
