Realizing anion−rich Li+ solvation structure is regarded as a promising strategy to produce an inorganic−rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, thereby significantly improving electrochemical properties. Despite this advantage, anion−rich Li+ solvation structure has an apparent drawback of sluggish bulk ionic conduction owing to its voluminous cluster, increasing concentration polarization. Because both bulk ionic conduction and electrochemical properties of the SEI layer determine the electrochemical performance, it is necessary to address this counterbalance to achieve longevous cycling performance.
Herein, a novel ambidextrous separator, incorporating hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and sericin, was proposed to construct anion−derived SEI layer and concurrently enable facile Li+ conduction in the electrolyte solution by the two−step modification in Li+ solvation structure. Based on the Lewis’s acid−base interaction between solvent and HPMC, Li+ tends to migrate in a relatively de-solvated state in the electrolyte solution, resulting in a facile bulk Li+ conduction. As the de-solvated Li+ approaches the sericin layer, TFSI− anion which is trapped to the anionphilic sericin spontaneously participates in the solvation structure of Li+, increasing anion−rich solvation structure at the interface between Li metal and sericin to produce inorganic−rich SEI layer. Owing to this distinctive mechanism, this solvation−modulating separator promotes the formation of beneficial anion−derived SEI layer without compromising the bulk Li+ conduction, effective in suppressing Li dendrite. As a result, the LMBs employing the Sericin/HPMC−based separator achieved a long-term cycling performance with stable electrochemical reversibility, highlighting the effectiveness of two−step modulation in Li+ solvation structure to stabilize Li metal anodes.
