Food security is defined as “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life (World Food Summit, 1996)”. Food crisis consists of three factors of supply, demand, allocation. The factors are affected by decline of cultivation area, climate change, deterioration of environment, increase of population etc.. What dominates food security is the productivity of main crops, but what control the productivity is environment including droughts, diseases and so on. This keynote address tends to emphasize the importance of agricultural environment and agro-food safety controlling the food security. R&D strategies on agricultural environment and agro-food safety for food security of NAS (National Institute of Agricultural Sciences) are focused on weather, water, soil and safety management, disease & insect, export support for agricultural products, policy support for safety. In the case of weather, the early warning system on meteorological disaster customized for farm is going to spread to volunteer farm. The system provide personalized information service using application of mobile phone for each volunteer farmhouse, and informationservice by internet for general farm. NAS is also developing the estimation technique of crop yield & cultivation area for balance of supply and demand, and integration of big data on soil & agricultural meteorology for right crop suitable for each farm. The information for promotion of special agricultural products suitable for some region on the base of the integration technique is providing to policy maker of central and local government. In the case of water, techniques for pre-emptive correspondence on drought & flood in farm land for sustainable productivity are developing. In the agro-food safety sector, NAS is focusing on the techniques on reduction and analysis of chemical and biological risk factor for the safety management, and protection of disease and insects flowed from overseas, and pesticides safety management of exported agricultural products for export support, and production of safe agricultural products for global GAP and policy support. In the future, NAS will effort to develop the techniques for sustainable production in the sector of agricultural environment and agro-food safety for food security.
