      Jung, Euen Hyuk (Sarah). 2004. The Critical Review of the Role of Cues in written text processes from a Methodological Perspective. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-1, 121-136. The purpose of this paper is to critically review the empirical studies that investigated the effects of cues on reading comprehension from a methodological viewpoint. Cues are meta-linguistic devices that guide readers how to interpret the information by indicating the structural patterns of the text. Such cues include previews, summarizers, pointer words, and logical connectives. Previous empirical research has shown that cues help readers: (a) recall significantly more information overall, as well as more important information from the text, (b) perform better on tasks involving inferences, (c) selectively direct their attention to the key conceptual ideas, and (d) produce a better organization of the text in their recall protocols. The research methodologies used in these studies, however, should deserve reconsideration. The present paper points out the problems with the previous studies and suggests more rigorous research practices in examining the role of cues in written text processing. (Yonsei University)
