In the Balhae tombs, numerous cases have been identified in which the remains of two or more individuals are found within a single burial chamber. This phenomenon, long noted and referred to as “multi-person burial,” has often been regarded as a unique feature of the Balhae tombs, distinct from other dynasties. However, it should be understood as part of a broader East Asian practice, originating from the continuation of secondary burials.
The skeletal remains of the deceased appear either in anatomically continuous form or as collected bones. The collected skeletal remains may suggest that the previously interred individuals were either reorganized within the tomb or had undergone excarnation externally before being placed inside. During this process, bones were arranged and repositioned in various ways. At Ning’an Dazhudun and Dongning Dashengzi, remains were organized individually along the northern wall. Circumstances suggesting the interment of excarnated skeletal remains in wooden boxes or coffins are also observed at Helong Beidai, Tumen Liangshuiguoyuan, and Ning’an Hongzunyuchang. At Antu Dongqing, Zhongping, and Ning’an Hongzunyuchang, a pattern of superimposed burials is observed, where the burial surface is covered with soil and additional interments continuing above it.
The persistence of additional burials in existing tombs, despite the possibility of constructing new ones, indicates that funerary practices based on kinship or familial ties were widely accepted. This reflects a pattern commonly observed in East Asia, where horizontal-chamber tombs were employed. Considering the Liudingshan tombs, it is reasonable to posit that Balhae’s unique burial system developed from the practice of additional burials in the Liaodong region (Shenyang and Fushun) during the late Goguryeo and Andong Protectorate periods and the Mohe-style customs of the Second Songhua River area—characterized by frequent bone collection and excarnation—merged with the broader Pan-East Asian universal tradition of additional interments in horizontalentry tombs.
