This paper starts with the problematic issue : Are women only victim of patriarchy?, and deal with this problem by analyzing the dualism of victim and injurer in feminist theory. In doing so, it aims to critic the dichotomous epistemologic standpoint of feminist theory and calls for developing alternative paradigm.
During last decades, feminist research has provided brillant critique of social practices of patriarchal cultures and lead us to new critical insights into women's life and their social activities.
However, most feminists inherited theories, concepts, methods and goals of inquiry from the modern dichotomous epistemology. Examining contemporary feminist theory(liberal-feminist theory, marxist-feminist theory, radical feminist theory, socialist-feminist theory) I show how feminists share the dichotomous epistemologic standpoint and the fundamental assumption about the bipolar relation of power and powerless, or victim and injurer, which does not fit for the inquiry of the relation between women and men.
What counts as feminist theory must not be grounded on particial and distorting experiences of women. We need a new feminist epistemology which is closer to women's experience. I argue that a more reliable understanding of women's life would be gained by thinking not only the position as victim, but also the role as complice which women occupy within the patriarchal society. The concept of complice can show how social activities of women tolerate patriarchal social relation which subordinate women to men and how contribute to the maintenance of patriarchal structure.
Fully developed feminist consciousness rest on the recognition the dark experience and the social responsibility of women. The recognition of their social responsibility can empower them to resist the patriarchal relation.
